30 years ago I would have said that Barthe's statement was unquestionably true. It still may be true, but today I no longer see that it matters. I find myself or parts of me in many of my characters. Often times I only realiize it after the character breaks it to me when he or she finally has my undivided attention.

I agree with you. Not sure why at the moment, but I do. I like what you said, especially the last sentence you wrote. I don't see how, given that writers are human beings, we can keep some part of ourselves out of any of our characters.
