Food for Thought

No New Posts Narrative's voice

According to narrative theorists like French literary critic, Roland Barthes, “The author of a narrative is in no way to be confused with the narrator of that narrative” (The Cambridge Introduction to Narrative, 2008). Do you agree?

No New Posts Aging and Creativity

I find Gene D. Cohen’s essay on Creativity and Aging to be encouraging (A Guide to Humanistic Studies in Aging 2010). Dr. Cohen is challenging conventional wisdom regarding what researchers in the past have chosen to either disbelieve or ignore; Creativity increases with age. I find his Creativity equation fascinating.

C=me2 (square)

According to Dr. Cohen, creativity (C) is the result of our mass (m) of knowledge, multiplied by the effects of our two dimensions of experience (e-squared). The first dimension is our inner world experience reflecting maturity through psychological and emotional growth over the years. The second dimension is our outer world encounters, reflecting the accumulated life experiences as we interact with all that is around us.

What do you think of Cohen's Creativity equation?

No New Posts Is the glass half full?

"I have reigned more than fifty years in victory and peace," the great caliph Abdul Rahim once remarked. "During this time I have been beloved by my people, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honors, power and pleasure have all been at my beck and call, nor has any earthly pleasure been missing to complete my sense of perfect bliss. In this situation I have diligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness that have fallen to my lot. They number fourteen."
